Klangforum Wien works repeatedly with different artists and musicians from around the world. In March 2022 it was pleased to receive the NYKY Ensemble and to make music together. This, however, was not their first joint project; in October 2021 Klangforum Wien traveled to Helsinki and performed during its visit together with the NYKY Ensemble in the Helsinki Music Centre. Together, they performed the work in vain by the multiple award-winning composer Georg Friedrich Haas. Today, their international cooperation continues in Vienna.
The NYKY Ensemble
The NYKY Ensemble is an ensemble for new music at the Sibelius Academy of the University of Arts in Helsinki and was founded in 2009 by Professor Tuija Hakkila. As a forum for new music, it offers students the opportunity to become acquainted with a wide variety of trends and techniques in contemporary music and to try out their musical skills in joint projects. The ensemble's line-up consists of Sibelius Academy students and is not fixed, but varies depending on the program performed. In addition, for each concert project, the Ensemble is mentored by other guest musicians or guest ensembles who are distinguished by their expertise in the field of new music.
The NYKY Ensemble has already participated in many exciting projects in the past, in which they often place a special focus on interdisciplinary projects. Among others, these include the world premiere of the opera Flash Flash by Juhani Nuorvala, a collaboration with Liisa Pentti +Co, a contemporary dance group, and a dance program at the “Outokumpu vocational school” in North Karelia. The ensemble has also performed at numerous festivals in Helsinki, such as Musica nova Helsinki, Helsinki Festival and Flow Festival.
The collaboration of Klangforum Wien and the NYKY ensemble
In its fifth concert from the PRO©ESSION cycle series, the Klangforum Wien performs with the NYKY Ensemble . Together they present the audience a selected program that once again underlines the Austrian-Finnish exchange. The two Ensemble will perform Birds of Paradise by the composer duo NIMIKRY as well as two world premieres by composition students of the Sibelius Academy. With Sirius by Aslihan Keçebaşoğlu and The Harvest by Ville Raasakka, a young generation of Finnish composition is represented in the concert.
The gathering of the NYKY Ensemble and Klangforum Wien is part of the "International Visitor Programme" launched at the Sibelius Academy in 2019. In the programme, international artist:s are invited to teach students over a period of one to two years. The program is supported by the "Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation" and "Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation".
