On 13 June 1985, the foundation stone was laid for a history of success in many respects in the creation of new music. The founding of Klangforum Wien as a soloist ensemble not only created excellent conditions for adequately realizing the previously unimaginable in terms of sound creativity, but also led to numerous encounters with highly talented musicians over these first four decades, who became significant companions of the ensemble in masterclasses, but above all as part of the ensemble's own PPCM professorship at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.

With them, the established ensemble framework of the KLANGFORUM WIEN ORCHESTRA will be expanded to include large orchestral works of contemporary music in its own history of interpretation. The KLANGFORUM WIEN ORCHESTRA scales up many of the ensemble's characteristic components.
As part of the Salzburg Festival 2025, KLANGFORUM WIEN ORCHESTRA celebrates its debut. First, with a new production of Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters under the direction of Evgeny Titov. Including the libretto by Claus H. Henneberg and Peter Eötvös, it represents one of the most fascinating contemporary works of music theater. Under the baton of Sylvain Cambreling, KLANGFORUM WIEN ORCHESTRA will also perform works by Pierre Boulez together with sorpanist Sarah Aristidou, thus paying tribute to the composer and conductor on his 100th birthday.
"In dialog with young musicians, we are able to exchange ideas with the next generation, which is an important aspect in the fifth decade of this ensemble's existence."
