AMOPERA becomes a student research project about contemporary music theater

What does music theater stand for today? Students from the Department of Musicology at the University of Vienna explore this question in the seminar "Contemporary Forms of Music Theatre with the Case Study 'AMOPERA'". The concertante-performative meta-opera by Klangforum Wien and Needcompany serves as a starting point for musicological explorations. (Summer semester 2025)

AMOPERA is a foray through the most recent 100 years of opera literature. By way of montage, a diverse range of the current repertoire becomes tangible and reveals hidden connecting lines that extend beyond the autonomy of the individual work. Together with the performers, the musicians form an integral part of the collective on stage. → Learn more about AMOPERA

Under the guidance of Dr. Monika Voithofer, BA BA MA, the students examine an expanded concept of music theater and neo-narrative approaches that transcend institutionalized genre definitions. To this end, they attend rehearsals and the Vienna performance of AMOPERA, conduct discussions with the artists and refine their journalistic interview techniques.
