Academy - Competition - Festival

Founded by Beat Furrer and Ernst Kovacic and looked after with fiery esprit by Ute Pinter, impuls is an international platform for exchange and encounters encompassing the widest possible aesthetic spectrum. For Klangforum Wien, impuls has always been and continues to be an excellent opportunity for discovering outstanding positions amongst the next generations of composers.

The impuls academy has developed into one of the leading international institutions in which young musicians and composers from all over the world can intensively engage with contemporary music in theory and practice. The popular reading sessions with Klangforum Wien form part of the program.

The impuls festival offers a diverse programme of music and discourse at various venues throughout the city of Graz. The festival showcases internationally renowned musicians and up-and-coming ensembles, who not only perform but also impart their knowledge to the next generation of musicians. Through the performance of central works of the 20th and 21st century, alongside numerous premieres of new pieces by contemporary composers, the event provides current and diverse insights into the scenes of New Music.

Every two years impuls opens a call for its international composition competition, commissions new works for ensemble from the composers selected, and invites them to work intensively with Klangforum Wien at the impuls composition workshop. The newly created works are premiered by Klangforum Wien during the impuls festival.
