The Concert Cycle
A face shrouded in mystery serves as the symbol of the new 26/27 concert series. What matters is the voice that speaks to us from afar, from deep below, or from high above. “VOCE” stands for a concert series which – in its diversity of voices – traces a wide arc: starting from solid foundations, Klangforum Wien explores a great number of new positions for its repertoire.
In the works by Isabel Mundry and Salvatore Sciarrino, new impulses shine forth, emerging from sound worlds lost in time. With Michael Finnissy, Unsuk Chin, and Liza Lim (world premiere), we can intuit the world soul oscillating between sun and stars. Gestures of liberation, extreme silence and utmost fragility merge in the music of György Ligeti, Mark Andre (Austrian premiere), and György Kurtág, before we immerse ourselves in Hans Werner Henze's uncompromising examination of the voice per se. Magnus Lindberg, Pierre Jodlowski, Sarah Nemtsov, and Unsuk Chin make an archaic, unbridled energy physically perceptible – similar to the pent-up powers which erupt in one great outburst in works by Egemen Kurt (world premiere), Sofia Avramidou, Arnau Gran i Romero, Mikel Urquiza, and Oxana Omelchuk. Finally, Hans Zender’s 33 Variations on 33 Variations encounter a centrifugal accelerando which, in the piece by Georg Friedrich, hurls us into the depths of space, weiter und weiter und weiter.
In the course of the 26/27 season, the concerts will be lead by Conductor in Residence Vimbayi Kaziboni, as well as by Susanne Blumenthal, Sylvain Cambreling, Ingo Metzmacher, Friederike Scheunchen, Jack Sheen and Bas Wiegers.
Following its Austrian premiere in November 2023, the unique concert installation 11,000 Strings for 50 Pianos and Ensemble by Georg Friedrich Haas returns to Vienna, starting our series in an optional extra concert on September 20, 2026.
