Schönberg and the Schrammel Brothers

The light and sweet, intoxicated dances and songs of the brothers Johann and Josef Schrammel, dating back to the second half of the 19th century, have remained part of the core repertoire in the wine taverns and “Heurigen” at the outskirts of Vienna – and they form surprisingly coherent and homogenous companion pieces for Schönberg’s Pierrot lunaire and Serenade.

This programme, which Klangforum Wien has first performed in the 2001/2002 season, will be rounded off by a selection of Friedrich Cerha’s near-inscrutable Viennese chansons, demonstrating admirably a musical continuum in what is allegedly a part of musical history much fragmented and fractured.

With pieces by Arnold Schönberg, Johann und Josef Schrammel, Vinzenz Stelzmüller, Anton Strohmayer and Friedrich Cerha.
