In the Ears of the Others or: how musicians listen

Before the cycle concerts of the 2017/18 season, members of Klangforum Wien present their very personal approach to the music of the evening's programme. By sharing what inspires us, we’d like to afford our audience a sensuously tangible experience.

Not that contemporary music needs to be explained. No. It doesn't have to.

Nonetheless, there is a lot to be gained from personal contact with the artists, from conversations with composers, in order to learn more about this intricate mixture of the person and their oeuvre. We are fortunate that most of the composers whose music we play are still very much alive and offer us this opportunity.

Aiming for a tangible, sensory experience, we show what excites us.

In this process, we are guided by our interest in probing more deeply into the individual sound-cosmos of each composer; but also we endeavour to learn more about how other people listen to music. What in particular do they listen to? What is important for them and why? What role do emotions, sensuality, comprehension play in this process; in short: in what kind of categories do they listen?

An encounter with the way in which others listen to music always opens the possibility of discarding our own habits and expanding the world of our perception. A step into the unknown.
