With 11,000 strings for 50 pianos distributed around the room at hundredths of a tone intervals and a chamber orchestra , Georg Friedrich Haas explores a microtonal space for 50 pianists on just as many pianos and an Ensemble. The world premiere in Bolzano ( August 1, 2023) was performed by pianists from numerous conservatories and universities together with the Mahler Academy Orchestra. The first subsequent performance was part of the Wien Modern 2023 festival: Klangforum Wien , with the participation of 50 pianists from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW), played the original version of the work for the first time in the Great Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus ( November 1, 2023). Further tour stops of the 11,000 Strings were: Prague Spring Festival (June 2, 2024), Holland Festival in Amsterdam (June 22, 2024), Düsseldorf Festival ( September 15, 2024), Kunstfestspiele Herrenhausen (May 22, 2025).
From September 30 - October 7, 2025, the North American premiere of this monumental concert installation took place at the Park Avenue Armory in New York.
