According to unproven legend, Gustav Mahler had Charles Ives' Symphony No. 3 in his luggage as a score on his last Atlantic crossing to Vienna. Thomas Hampson is not alone in seeing both masters as witnesses to a fundamental process of upheaval, which probably has its counterpart in our immediate present.
