In a kind of defiant self-assurance, Olga Neuwirth composed the series coronAtion against the backdrop of 249 days of concert bans due to the coronavirus pandemic. Together with the Angewandte, the MAK and the mdw, Wien Modern is bringing all six parts to the stage live for the first time.
CoronAtion IV, an immersive, hypnotic spatial music for three percussionists and samples, will be performed for the first time in its full length of 19 x 31 minutes (although a short visit is of course just as possible as binge listening). To kick things off, coronAtion I and III will be performed in the Kassenhalle of the former Postsparkasse, also designed by Otto Wagner, followed by coronAtion V at half-time. coronAtion II and VI will be performed every hour on the other side of the Stubenring in the MAK's Säulenhalle.
Incidentally, this unconventional world premiere in two architectural monuments of human encounters can certainly also be seen as a celebration: Since her appointment as a professor at the mdw in 2021, Olga Neuwirth has been living in Vienna again after many years. In 2022, she was awarded the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize.
