Klangforum Wien opens the 51st Darmstadt Summer Course with Situations by Georges Aperghis. "Music is the best way towards understanding another person," maintains the France-based Greek composer. He shares a long common history with the musicians of Klangforum Wien. Thus, he collected some very personal stories of the ensemble’s soloists as material for this “Soirée musicale”. Arranged in the form of a triptych, the individual sound narratives – mosaics consisting of solos, duets, trios and quartets – are woven together to become one large fabric of sound; a mix of individual and collective creativity – occasional breakouts included.
Aperghis once said that he often thinks of an acrobat when composing, who climbs or jumps from one rope to another and only finds his balance again at the very last moment. Situations could also be heard this way: as a piece in which the audience, like in a circus manege, follows the musicians of Klangforum Wien in amazement and admires how virtuosic they handle their ropes…
Emilio Pomàrico, conductor of the 2013 world premiere in Donaueschingen, will also direct the ensemble on this occasion.
