Evan Hulbert,
double bass

Ö1 Audio-Porträt
Evan Hulbert

To interpret is to create. This is the core tenet of bassist Evan Hulbert’s music making, fully realized through combining a rich tradition of American orchestral double bass playing with a keen desire to explore and expand new horizons of postmodern art music.

His appearances with Klangfourm Wien range from traditional solo and chamber contexts to free improvisation, multimedia presentations, and musical theatre. Previously he served as Associate Principal Bass of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Among others, he has performed with the Detroit, Boston Symphony Orchestras and Ensemble Modern, also serving as guest principal with Göteborgs Symfoniker and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Receiving his Bachelor of Music from Rice University in 2015, he has been a fellow at Music Academy of the West, New York String Orchestra Seminar, Klangspuren Schwaz, and the Tanglewood Music Festival where in 2015 he received the Maurice Schwartz Prize.
